Solar PV Recycling in India

Solar sector in India has grown rapidly in the last five years. Total installed solar capacity has crossed the 25 GW mark and is expected to reachh 45 GW by end 2020. While installed capacities are on a rise, there is a lack of clarity on end of life treatment of solar systems in India.
As per preliminary estimates, solar PV waste in India is estimated to amound to 8-14 million tonnes by 2050, increasing its share in global PV-waste from 1-2% at present to 12-17% in 2050. At present, majority of central and state government solar tenders require solar power developers to adhere to E-Waste (Management) Rules and Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules for waste disposal. Disappointingly, these rules do not specify any procedure for collection and recycling of solar PV waste specifically. This poses a serious concern about treatment of PV waste in India.

1. Quantum of PV waste, associated technical challenges and market developments in recycling space.
2. Suo motu initiatives taken by market players including module manufacturers and project developers.
3. Existing policy and regulatory framework, and technical specifications in solar tenders.

With DSM since 2015, Vivek Chaturvedi was appointed Regional Director for DSM’s solar business in India, Middle East and Africa regions in April 2017. Prior to this he was Country Manager for DSM’s solar business in India.
A solar enthusiast, Vivek has been instrumental in shaping India’s PV industry since 2009, participating in most parts of the solar value chain in India and around the world. He promoted and established “Make in India” by launching the Indian PV panel brand in more than 30 countries between 2009 and 2013 and established India’s number one brand in Solar EPC between 2012 and 2014. He co-chaired the FICCI Solar Energy Task Force since its inception in 2010 till 2015, and was one of the founding members of the Indian Solar Manufacturers Association (ISMA).
Vivek brings more than 20 years of leadership experience across various industries including the office automation, IT and entertainment industries. He took office products inside Indian homes/home offices that kicked off the concept of retailing office automation products in India between 1996 and 1999. Between 2001 and 2008 he launched “Made in India” IT Media (Optical Discs) products in more than 80 countries.

Born in Dec 24th1969, Vivek is a Science graduate and holds a Masters of Business Administration in Marketing/Systems from the Birla Institute of Technology in Mesra. He is married with a son and enjoys travelling and gardening.
Speaker: Dr. Ing. Anil Kottantharayil, National Centre for Photovolatic Research and Education (NCPRE)
Anil Kottantharayil received the Dr.Ing. degree (with the highest honours summa cum laude) from the Universitat der Bundeswehr, Munich, Germany, in 2002. From 2001 to 2006, he was with the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre, Leuven, Belgium, where he worked on FinFETs, metal gate, and high-κ integration in logic technologies. Since 2006, he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, where he is currently a Professor.
His research interests are in the areas of novel transistors, memory technologies, graphene based devices, and silicon-based solar cells and modules. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 papers and conference presentations in these fields. He is a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Electron Devices Society and a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

Education: Rohit is an Electrical Engineer from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela
Prior to joining REC, Rohit has worked with global companies like Wipro EcoEnergy, Moser Baer Photo Voltaics, Delta Electronics, Eaton Electrical, etc. His prior experience in establishing new markets for electrical backup equipment manufacturers and short stints with Moser Baer & Wipro EcoEnergy has helped him establishing REC as the leading European module manufacturer in the Indian market. Rohit has extensive experience in Solar PV, handling module sales for a quality player like REC into the Utility and growing C&I market in India. Within a span of 6 years, REC is the first manufacturer with European lineage to achieve an install base of well over 375MW in the Indian Subcontinent.

Vinay has been working as Managing Director at BRIDGE TO INDIA since August 2013. He advises companies, institutions and policy makers on a vast range of strategic, policy, financial and business development challenges in the Indian solar market.
Vinay is passionate about developing successful, profitable and sustainable business models that solve India’s energy problems without having an adverse impact on the environment.
Prior to this, he worked at Standard Chartered Bank as Senior Director, Project Finance, South Asia and financed a number of wind and solar projects in India. Other previous job stints include working at National Australia Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation where he was responsible for debt financing of big-ticket infrastructure and energy projects.
Vinay holds an MBA degree from London Business School and IIM Ahmedabad in addition to BE Mechanical from Delhi College of Engineering.
